Jaffna BBC correspondent Nimalrajan Mailvaganam’s funeral took place on Saturday at the Catholic cemetery, Gurunagar, Jaffna, 396 km from the city of Colombo. His fellow journalists gathered to pay their last respect to this young journalist who was ironically assassinated while he was listening to one of his own broadcasts on BBC. Mailvaganam is one of the few journalists who had the courage to disseminate information from the news starved Jaffna peninsula to the rest of Sri Lanka and the world, sources reported. Further the Sri Lankan government strongly condemned this brutal assassination of an innocent journalist. The statement of the new media Minister emphasised the importance of holding thorough, impartial and speedy investigation into the murder of Nimalarajan. The newspapers reported that the North Sri Lanka Journalists’ Association called upon all the associations of journalists in Sri Lanka to bring pressure on the government to accelerate the investigations and bring the culprits to book. However the Editors’ Guild pointed out that the death of Nimalarajan created a void that can not be easily filled.
