TULF appeal Govt to disarm Tamil militant groups
[23 October 2000]

The Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) appealed to Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake to disarm the Tamil militant groups immediately pointing out that a lot of crime are going on undetected in the Jaffna peninsula due to the power of Tamil militant groups in the area.

The appeal was made by the TULF leader V. Anandasangari through a letter sent to the Prime Minister.

Referring to the murder of the BBC correspondent Mylvaganam Nirmalarajan, he requested the government to conduct a thorough investigation to reveal the assailants. He was also of the view that as long as there are armed groups in Jaffna, no one would dare come forward to give evidence.

He also said that he was happy by the government's move of disarming TELO and PLOTE and stated that this should be done impartially and made compulsory to all parties.
