Massive Army recruitment drive to continue war in North East
[24 October 2000]

Beginning tomorrow, the Army will launch a massive recruitment drive to continue fighting the war in the North East of the country, military sources said.

The month long recruitment scheme is being carried out to gain adequate numbers to carry out military operations, following heavy fighting in the Jaffna Peninsula in the last few weeks.

The recruitment drive is to enlist a targeted 10,000 soldiers from October 25 to November 30.

“ We aim to replace the war heroes fallen in recent battles in the North with the new recruits to put incessant pressure on the Tigers who have faced continuous defeats in Northern battles,” Army Commander, Lieutenant General Lionel Balagalle said yesterday.

During the attacks from September 23 to last weekend the Army lost 266 personnel including officers and around 2000 received injuries.

According to him the LTTE is too short of cadres at the moment and has declared compulsory conscription for youth living in the Vanni.
