World leaders gathered in New York for the Millennium Summit pledged, “to free their peoples from the scourge of war, extreme poverty and pollution. They undertook to promote democracy and the rule of law. These pledges give us cause for hope. But they will change nothing if they are not followed by action” says Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations in the message to mark the 55th anniversary of the United Nations. The anniversary was commemorated at 8.45 a.m. at the United Nations Compound in Colombo today. Minister of Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development Prof. G. L. Peiris was the chief guest. Peter Witham UN Representative in Colombo addressed the invitees.
