Consequent to the incidents which occurred in Trincomalee on Monday October 23, over 1000 civilians belonging to all three communities were displaced and have sought refuge in schools in the China Bay area, the International Committee of the Red Cross said. Around 1000 civilians (including children) from 250 Muslim and Tamil families who fled from their homes in Sinnappilaichenai, Neerodmunai in China Bay have taken refuge in the Muslim Vidyalayam in China Bay. Around 240 civilians including children from 61 Sinhala families displaced from their village, Dimuthugama in China Bay area, have taken shelter in the Sinhala Vidyala in China Bay. ICRC staff, from its Trincomalee office, yesterday distributed Non-Food Relief Assistance (mats, soap, plastic roofing sheets etc.) to the displaced at these sights. The ICRC Mobile Health Team also visited these schools and conducted clinics for the displaced. In addition, a few latrines have been erected and the sights have been sprayed with antiseptics as a preventive measure against the spread of diseases. The ICRC, which opened an office in Trincomalee in 1990, today has a staff of three expatriates and 30 Sri Lankans carrying out its humanitarian activities in the Trincomalee district.
