UNP General Secretary Gamini Athukorala and three other supporters were released on personal bail after they surrendered before the Ratnapure Magistrate yesterday. They appeared in court as suspects in two polls related incidents in Nivitigala. Gamini Athukorala is alleged to have assaulted a group of persons on October 9 at Nivitigala and was also involved in a bomb attack that took place on the same day in the Nivitigala town. Meanwhile Nivitigala police stated that seven persons had been arrested and detained until an identification parade was held in connection with these incidents. The Police had objected to the suspects being released on bail because they had not surrendered to the Police when asked to do so and might intimidate witnesses.
