Grounds set to break ice between CBK and Ranil
[25 October 2000]

The ruling People’s Alliance and the main opposition United National Party(UNP) are planning to hold talks soon to discuss the common strategy for a new political culture, the sources revealed.

Meanwhile some local newspapers revealed that Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and Tyronne Fernando, UNP Minister of Parliament, are playing active roles to bridge the gap between these two parties.

Further the UNP negotiator Tyronne Fernando is said to have already handed over a four-page draft containing their proposals to Prime Minister.

The proposals include the setting up of independent commission for elections, the police, public service and the judiciary, along with wide ranging media reforms and an anti-corruption pledge by all parliamentarians.

However it is high time to break all boundaries and find a long-lasting solution for the country’s ethnic problem.
