President’s Deepavali message
[27 October 2000]

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga issuing a Deepavali message on Wednesday said that it is by building mutual trust and confidence among various communities and religious groups while retaining their separate identities that we can find a solution to the ethnic problem which is the major problem confronting us today. 

‘The prime aim of us all on this great day should be to dispel injustice and inequality and achieve peace, happiness and prosperity by stabilising friendship and mutual trust among various communities living in this country’ the President’s message said’.

'I consider it a privilege to send this message of greetings and join Hindu followers throughout the world who are celebrating the Deepavali festival today as the day of prosperity which dispels ignorance and cruelty and spreads the light of wisdom’.

'I fervently believe that the aim of us all on this Deepavali Day should be to dispel injustice and inequality and achieve peace, happiness and prosperity, and take steps to stabilise friendship and mutual trust among various communities living in this country’. 

'Let us on this great day resolve to live in a united Sri Lanka in peace and friendship while protecting the national, religious and cultural identities of various communities’.

'I sincerely wish all Hindus in Sri Lanka a happy and prosperous Deepavali'
