25 killed, 18 injured in mob attack on rehab camp

Twenty five inmates were killed and another eighteen injured when a mob attacked the rehabilitation camp in Bindunuwewa, Bandarawela on Wednesday after setting it on fire.

The victims were members of LTTE those who had surrendered to the authorities.

According to certain reports, there had been some internal conflicts in the camp that had led over thousands of villagers to attack the camp.

The inmate Tiger suspects had also threatened the police officers on duty to release them and had launched a protest campaign demanding their immediate release.

Army spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne denied army's involvement with the incident, and stated that when the army went to the camp at the request of the police, on Wednesday morning to diffuse the tension, everything had happened.

Army security at the camp has now been strengthened.

Meanwhile, immediate investigations are being carried out regarding the incident on the directions of President Kumaratunga.

President Kumaratunga, condemning the attack on Wednesday gave strict instructions to the relevant authorities to conduct a fair and a thorough investigation.
