Unrest at Nuwara Eliya after Bindunuwewa
[30 October 2000]

Unruly Tamil mobs had attacked several Sinhalese shops and blocked the roads leading to villages in the Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts, demonstrating against the attack on the Bindunuwewa Rehabilitation camp.

Residents of Nuwara Eliya and neighboring areas involved in the protest had forced the establishments in the area to display white and black flags as a sign of mourning.

The mobs who had demonstrated on the highways had stoned several vehicles on the main roads.

According to police witnesses, gangs of 20-30 Tamils were seen on a rampage setting fire to vehicles.

According to the Talawakele police, two officers of the Great Western Railway Station were seriously injured from a mob attack on the railway station.

"Four compartments of Udarata Menike train plying from Badulla to Colombo were set on fire by the Tamil estate workers who have taken around 120 people hostage, both passengers and railway staff," police sources said.

But military spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said that even though some of duty officers informed him of some incidents, he couldn't confirm the holding of 120 passengers and the railway staff.

However, a statement from the Information Department said a decision was taken to impose curfew in the area to bring the situation under control.
