TULF highlights the need for an impartial investigation
[30 October 2000]

The Tamil United Liberation Front [TULF] has appealed to the President to initiate an impartial investigation to bring the culprits of the attack on Bindunuwewa rehabilitation centre in Bandarawela , 113 miles off the city of Colombo, to book.

The incident took place on 25 October taking the lives of 27 Tamil detainees and causing severe injuries to so many others.

This detainee camp which was administered by the National Youth Council was started under the Disaster Management Unit of the Presidential Task Force. Under the President's instructions the detainees in the camp were undergoing special rehabilitation training when the incident took place unexpectedly.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga strongly condemned this act of violence and had taken immediate measures to conduct an impartial investigation.

The TULF’s Secretary General Mr. Sampathan has stated that the government should take necessary steps to give protection to the surviving detainees who would be prime witnesses.

Furthermore the government has appealed to all citizens to act sensibly and responsibly and let not the history repeat, the sources reported.
