Govt impose curfew in Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts

The Government in a press release last night imposed curfew in the Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts to give full protection to the people and their properties in these areas.

Legal action has also been taken against those persons involved in the incidents, the press release stated.

The Government Information Department press release states :

"Army and Police personnel have already been deployed to beef up security in order to prevent recurrence of any such disturbances.

It has been observed that an attempt has been made to create disorder and a conditions of disturbance by an organized group of persons behind the incidents taken place in some areas in the estates. In view of this situation all police stations in these areas have been issued with orders to take all appropriate measures to prevent any recurrence of such disturbances. Immediately action was also taken to provide army protection to these areas. Since these measures have brought a peaceful situation all peace-loving people are called upon earnestly to remain calm and not to be misled by false statements and also to assist the police and the army to prevent any occurrence of disturbance in any area.

The above security measures have been taken at an emergency meeting of the Heads of Security Forces chaired by the Hon. Prime Minister on an urgent directive by H.E. the President and it is hereby informed that a curfew has been imposed to be operative from today (29.10.00) at 8.00 pm until 5.00 am on the following day (30.10.00) in the administrative districts of Nuwara Eliya and Badulla".
