Tigers violate international convention and attack ambulance
[31 October 2000]

The LTTE terrorists committed another violation of international rules of war by attacking an ambulance carrying an injured police officer yesterday morning, with heavy mortars in Poonani.

The police constable who was driving the van was killed in the malicious attack while the patient traveling in the ambulance including eight police officers were seriously injured.

The injured police officer was being transferred from the police point in Valachchenai which came under LTTE attack on Sunday night to the Polonnaruwa hospital for medical treatment.

According to international rules in a war it is prohibited to attack ambulances. But the LTTE breaching this convention attacked the moving ambulance with mortars.

Earlier, it was the hospital at Welikanda that received a similar attack from the Tigers that drew international condemnation.

Meanwhile, Tigers are continuing to rob food and other necessities from CWEs and civilian administrators like RRAN. These essentials are for the welfare of the civilians.

While killing farmers and fishermen, the LTTE has also gone to the extreme of demanding ransoms for kidnapped fishermen and other vendors.

"But the LTTE have now begun to claim their Human Rights while committing violations of Human Rights of other people," government sources said.
