A pre-planned hostage situation behind Bindunuwewa crime
[31 October 2000]

News about a classic 'hostage situation' had been the reason for the villagers to gather around the Bindunuwewa camp to find the detainees armed with many home made weapons and an electrified perimeter fence.

The inmates had been on a hunger strike on the evening of the 24th, demanding their release. They had also refused the authorities to leave the camp, taking the warders hostage.

"According to investigations unfolding for the past few days, it is clear that unrest had erupted after the transfer of a new LTTE surrendee called Anthony James, who is suspected to have been sent by the LTTE for a pre-planned operation to arouse the plantation Tamils," government sources said.

"The government will prove that the LTTE has planned this to embarrass the government at a time when the world is recognizing the terrorism of the LTTE".

Meanwhile, the government is trying to bring the other parties involved in the incident who had provoked the villagers falling prey to the intentions of the LTTE.

"If the villagers had not acted the way they had done things must have turned up differently," government sources said, referring to the high tension created by the inmates inside the camp.

"The LTTE and its pro-organizations would do its utmost to keep this issue going with their pre-planned pictures of victims taken during JVP insurgencies. But after analyzing their attempts to infiltrate the plantations, it is clear that they have seized the right opportunity while the government is trying to work towards a lasting solution, finally, with all other opposition and minority political parties".

"The Sinhalese people cannot be easily provoked now unlike those days like in the Black July. They had remained calm even while the LTTE staged attacks against civilians placing bus bombs. Even during the attack on the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, the Sinhalese people were tolerant, bearing the humiliation attack on their prestigious and most holiest places".

"When the LTTE stormed inside the Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhi temple killing those praying, cold bloodedly, the Sinhalese people bore this tragedy with unwavering fortitude".

"During the Rajagiriya incident where the LTTE suicide bombers went on a firing spree killing by standers and travelers in vehicles, the Colombo people were really calm. And they knew that the people in the South cannot be provoked easily. Therefore, their concentration went on to the Plantation sector, where the majority are Tamils. This was their best place to create unrest and evoke ethnic disharmony".
