Norway renews efforts to kick start peace process
[02 May 2001]

Norwegian Special Envoy Erik Solheim held talks with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Opposition [UNP] Leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe and top diplomats in Colombo, to kick-start the peace process once again.

Solheim was reportedly trying to work out a deal between the Government and the LTTE to defuse the war situation in the north, which escalated last week.  The Norwegian Envoy is reported to have met the Indian High Commissioner Gopal Krishna Gandhi with regard to India’s call for an early political solution to the ethnic conflict.

Meanwhile, newspapers in Colombo reported that Canadian High Commissioner Ruth Archibald had met the LTTE’s political wing leader, P Tamilchelvam in the Wanni last Monday.  The talks between them were described as constructive.
