The Sri Lankan Government stepped in on Thursday to ease tension between two rival groups after a day of violence that killed one person in the Central Town of Mawanella. President Kumaratunga who called an emergency meeting of the security authorities yesterday, gave strict orders to immediately arrest any person or group trying to incite violence or spread rumours. The Government warned last night that any troublemaker could face rigorous imprisonment ranging from three months to twenty years plus a fine, according to the Emergency Regulations. A resident of Mawanella when contacted on the telephone said that a minor spark between two Sinhala and Muslim traders had led to the clash. "This escalated to a day of violence," he said. Several buildings have been set on fire and one person is reported killed in the clashes. However, after the government clamped a curfew in Mawanella yesterday, law enforcement authorities were able to bring the town under control.
