The Export Development Board will launch a program to promote traditional export products in the areas of Udunuwara, Kattankudy and Puttlam and Kalpitiya. Three categories of traditional crafts; garments, handloom and reed ware products, have attained a reputation internationally. "With the cultural importance and the traditional skilled craftsmen that areas like Udunuwara in the Kandy area holds, we will be able to produce goods of a high standard which could reach the export market," Minister of Internal and International Trade & Commerce, Shipping Development and Muslim Religious Affairs, Rauff Hakeem said. Speaking further the Minister said, "I hope to assist traditional craftsmen through the EDB in collaboration with other Government and private sector organizations." The decline in demand for Sri Lankan brassware was mainly due to outdated products and designs, non-availability of technical assistance, limited outlets, non-availability of attractive items of utility value, the cost factor and the non-availability of finance.
