Curfew imposed in Colombo to quell protest
[04 May 2001]

A night curfew was imposed in the Sri Lanka’s Western Province after Police took to the streets of Colombo to calm rioting protestors who were demonstrating against recent attacks in the Central town of Mawanella.

The department of Information said the curfew will be imposed from 6 p.m. on Friday till 6 a.m on Saturday.

Muslim protestors burnt and stoned shops after Friday prayers protesting against attacks against Muslim traders in Mawanella.

Police said there had been some incidents in Pettah in Central Colombo, which houses several Muslim businesses. Shops were closed earlier in the day as a mark of protest in Pettah and other Muslim populated areas.

Eyewitnesses told PRIU that several shops had been burned in Maradana, also in Central Colombo. Police were able to restore calm to the areas a few hours after the protests.

On Wednesday night the government imposed a curfew and called on the army to control fighting that had broken out in Mawanella between Sinhala and Muslim traders.
