Chinese Premier to visit Sri Lanka
[09 May 2001]

The Chinese Premier Zhu Ronghi will be in Sri Lanka next week on a two-day visit. Economic and political relations between the two countries are expected to be strengthened by the Premier’s visit.

Diplomatic sources confirming the visit of the Chinese premier said the 150-member delegation would arrive on May 17. The Chinese Premier is expected to hold talks with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinhe and business and trade representatives from Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka and China have had strong political and economic relations over the last five decades. Ties between the two nations reached a pinnacle during the government of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. A historic trade pact was singed between Sri Lanka and China exchanging rubber for rice in the 1950's.
