Buddhists throughout the world celebrate Vesak on the full moon day in the month of May. Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of the Lord Buddha. The United Nations last year declared Vesak an international holiday. A Buddha statue was specially flown out to New York as a gift for the celebrations at the UN Head Quarters yesterday. Venerable Dr. Henepola Gunaratne, editor of the Buddhist bestseller 'Mindfulness in Plain English', delivered a special sermon. Mr. John de Saram, Sri Lanka's UN ambassador read out a special message sent by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
