Sri
Lankan FM says understanding on peace talks could be reached soon [09
May 2001]
Sri
Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Lakshaman Kadirgamar confirmed today that it
was possible that some understanding could be reached about the
commencement of talks. The Minister was responding to a question about
news reports, which claimed that peace talks would begin by May 15. “It
is possible that some understanding could be reached about the
commencement of talks,” he said. However, he declined to specify a date
for reaching such an understanding.
“I
can confirm that the peace process is still very much on track,” he
said. The Minister’s comments were made during an exclusive interview
with the PRIU, Wednesday.
He
asserted that, “The ending of the LTTE’s unilateral ceasefire and the
battle around Pallai have not interfered with the discussions which were
going on for many months now, on the question of how to arrange for the
peace talks.”
“The
Norwegian facilitators are still very active in reaching both parties,
namely the government and the LTTE. That is why I say the peace process is
still very active.”
The
government is expected to issue a statement in this regard, Thursday.
