Nine Sri Lankans arrested in Australia for people smuggling
[11 May 2001]

The suspected vessel that was allegedly involved in bringing 24 suspected illegal immigrants into Australia on 17 April was identified and impounded yesterday along with the nine Sri Lankan crew members on board.

Senator Chris Ellison of the Minister for Justice and Customs in Australia said yesterday that the Sri Lankan crew have been charged with people smuggling offences pursuant to the Migration Act 1958.

The vessel was identified and photographed in open sea, several hundred nautical miles off the coast of Exmouth, Australia.

The crew was expected to appear in court on Cocos Island yesterday and then be transferred to Perth. Senator Ellison said that the arrest showed the determination of the Commonwealth Government to prosecute people smugglers.

People smuggling is a serious offence in Australia that carries a sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment.
