Colombo, the number one city in Asia Pacific
[15 May 2001]

Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, was named the number one city in the Asia Pacific Region after competing with sixty other cities in the region.

Sri Lanka bagged the prestigious award at the Mayors' Asia Pacific Environmental Summit 2001 held May 6, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Omar Kamil, Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council said the award was a result of the two-year plan carried out by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) together with the co-operation of the people of Colombo. "The sixty Mayors who participated in the first Mayors' Summit in 1999 were assigned the task of improving the city environment and making their respective cities the best in the Asia Pacific Region," he added.

The Mayor said that long and short-term plans have already been drawn for the improvement of the basic amenities of the low-income dwellers in Colombo City.

He also said that Rs. 80 million had been allocated for these projects for the years 2000 and 2001, and that the CMC had completed 737 such projects last year.
