Solheim in Sri Lanka to push peace process
[15 May 2001]

Norwegian Special Envoy Erik Solheim arrived in Sri Lanka Tuesday for discussions with the Government and the LTTE.

He is expected to meet President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, and leaders of minority political parties.

The Norwegian Government is working towards an agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE for a cessation of hostilities and for face-to-face peace talks between the two parties.

In a recent interview in Oslo with the Norwegian magazine NOTAM, Solheim expressed confidence in the peace process. "What is most positive as we see it, is that neither the Government nor the LTTE try to lie to us. We can of course have differences in view of the methods used. But, at no point have the parties tried to deceive us. This means that the moment the parties say they will do something, they do it," he said.
