Nearly 25,000 residents of Jaffna now enjoy electricity round the clock. A 24-hour supply of electricity to Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna peninsula was disrupted due to the fighting between the rebel LTTE and government forces. The rebels have regularly destroyed supply lines to the north of the country, causing severe hardships to residents. An Assistant Engineer of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said, “Since the area is still not connected to the main grid, an American company in Kankesanturai caters to the demand for electricity in the peninsula using generators.” “Nearly 10,000 residents get power on alternate days because nine of the eighteen plants were damaged during last year’s fighting between the government forces and the LTTE,” the CEB engineer said. CEB sources say, five more mobile generators are to be added on for which the government has granted a total of Rs. 128m.
