A two-seater Cessna 152 Trainer was damaged and two crew members injured while attempting to land at the Katukurunda airfield situated 34 km south of Colombo. The Instructor and the Student Pilot from a private aviation training school were injured and are being treated at a nearby hospital. A spokesman for the Director General of Civil Aviation in Sri Lanka said the aircraft was badly damaged and investigations are continuing. No conclusions have been made on the cause of the crash, as the pilots of the ill-fated aircraft had not been interrogated. The Katukurunda airfield is used for training after the closure of the Colombo Airport Ratmalana, for trainee flights due to security reasons. Several aviation training schools in Sri Lanka offer courses leading to Civil Aviation Authority (UK) certificates and International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) recognized qualifications.
