Solar electricity for light, TV, radio

The Solar Electric Light Company (SELCO) of Washington, DC launched the SELCO Solar Lanka Limited by acquiring a 97 percent stake in RESCO Asia Limited. The company provides solar energy devices such as solar lighting, water heaters and pumps, serving consumers without access to grid electricity and those suffering from regular power blackouts.

A spokesman for the company said the company was acquired from RESCO Asia Limited, which has been in the business of rural power solutions to remote areas since 1997. The company has already electrified 2000 households through its 8 branches situated in the country.

SELCO specialises in solar energy services and distribution in the developing world with operations in India, Vietnam, China, and Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's demand for electricity has grown at a faster pace mainly due to dmoestic consumption. The demand for industrial electricity has grown by 8% in 2000 compared to the previous year. The percentage of households with electricity in the country stood at 58% in year 2000.

Two non-governmental organisations SoLanka Associates modelled after Enersol in the Dominican Republic and the Sarvodaya Jathika Sangamaya undertook the solar home system initiative in Sri Lanka.
