"Our countries share a special relationship" - President Kumaratunga

Speaking at a banquet held in honour of the visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike said that the historical relationship between China and Sri Lanka dates back to the early centuries of the Christian era, and ever since then the bonds between the two countries have strengthened.

President Kumaratunga also said that the Sri Lankan Government and the people were deeply grateful to the People's Republic of China for its continued support for the country's development efforts over the past several decades.

"China has been a great source of inspiration for Sri Lanka and our countries now share a special relationship," added President Kumaratunga.

President Kumaratunga held official discussions with the Chinese premier at the Presidential Secretariat this morning. [Full Report]
