The Chinese Premier and his entourage left Sri Lanka for Thailand, this morning, concluding a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka. A Chinese Embassy official described the visit as very successful and satisfactory. China yesterday extended grant assistance to Sri Lanka to the value of RMB 50 million (US $ 5.1 Million), to be used for development projects in Sri Lanka. The two countries signed an agreement on this effect, at the conclusion of the talks. Official talks focussed on strengthening bilateral relations, civil aviation and tourism. President Kumaratunga invited Chinese companies to invest in Sri Lanka and establish joint ventures. The Chinese Premier undertook to send an economic delegation to study areas for future co-operation and invited the Sri Lankan President to visit China. In an exclusive interview with the National Television, Rupavahini, to be aired later today, Premier Zhu Rongji, expressed interest in developing co-operation in the field of Information Technology in Sri Lanka. The two leaders recalled the longstanding relationship between the two countries from historical times. The Chinese Premier made a special reference to the role played by the Bandaranaike family in fostering and promoting relations between the two countries.
