Australia and 'Colombo Plan' to educate children to resist drugs
[29 May 2001]

The Colombo Plan drug advisory program and the Government of Australia has signed on a project to reduce the incidence of drug use by school children in South East Asia by enhancing their social competence skills to resist the attraction of drugs. The government of Australia would grant 120,000 Australian Dollars for this project through the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).

The Australian High Commission in Colombo in a media release said that the illicit drug trade has inflicted damage to adults and children in both developed and developing nations and economic reliance on the drug trade, and addiction has led to the exploitation by criminals and criminal organizations.  The release further states that negative impacts have prompted the governments to embark on proactive strategies to prevent the drug menace. It points out that a majority of people first use drugs at school age; therefore prevention work should start early to reduce the onset of drug use.

The Colombo Plan, which completed 50 years, was established at the Commonwealth Conference on Foreign Affairs held in Colombo in 1950. The main objective of the Colombo plan is to promote and support economic and social development in the Asia and the Pacific region while promoting technical cooperation among its members.
