First EU member to visit Sri Lanka

The EU's Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström was in the Island on a brief visit. This is the first visit of an EU member. 

The Commissioner had discussions with President Kumaratunga and Minister of Urban Development Mangala Samaraweera. She also participated in the Annual General Meeting of the Worldview International Foundation.

Commissioner Wallström a Swedish national was appointed a Member of the European Commission of Environment in September 1999. The European Commission's task is to ensure that the EU establish closer ties with its members and encourage the free movement of goods, services, capital and persons throughout the territory of the Union.
