UDA to rebuild Colombo's 'World Market Complex'
[30 May 2001]

A new complex for retail marketers is to be built in Colombo within the next three months at cost of Rs.40 Million [Us $ 4.4 Million]. The Urban Development Authorities recently cleared an area in the heart of the city, which was popularly known as the World Market.

The Director General of the Urban Development Authority, W A Siriwardene said shop spaces with all modern amenities will be made available to around 375 retailers. Priority will be given to the former occupants of the 'World Market'.  The popular 'World Market' had over the years deteriorated into an unpleasant and insecure place for people to shop around.

The UDA has launched on a bold plan to beautify all major cities in the country. The Urban Development planners have been making news in the recent past because of the removal of several unauthorised constructions in the metropolis.
