"The door to peace negotiations has always been open to the LTTE which they have never taken seriously. And the people of this country and the international community have understood the government's genuine desire to enter into peace negotiations," said Minister Yapa. He also said, "The stance taken by the LTTE in this regard is unacceptable to the Government. It is akin to a warning or a threat made by the LTTE to the Government." "The government has always taken every possible measure to ameliorate the dismal living conditions of the people in the north and the east. It is the desire of the Government to reduce the burden of the people whether it is in connection with the food supplies or the war," the Minister added. Minister Yapa reiterated the fact that the Government has never tried to obstruct the peace process. "Peace is the prime requisite of all the peace loving citizens and the government has well understood this," he said. Minister Yapa further said, "The Government is ready to go for a negotiated settlement without placing any pre-conditions." The Minister said that it is obvious when two parties or warring factions have been involved in a protracted war, that obstacles would be placed in front of them before a resolution can be found. However he insisted that the Tamil people also expected a more reasonable and flexible attitude from the LTTE. The Minister called upon the LTTE not to put unacceptable conditions before commencing the peace talks and help the government to bring a swift end to the conflict, which is also the desire of all Sri Lankans.
