Leading Buddhist Priest condemns attempt to impeach Chief Justice
[01 June 2001]

A Buddhist high priest vehemently condemned attempts made by the opposition to move a motion in the parliament to impeach the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva.

Most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter said that this was done on the instigation of unseen forces with the motive of slinging mud at the Chief Justice. "This would destabilise the legal process and judiciary and create anarchy in the country," he said at a press conference yesterday.

He also said that there were shortcomings in the private lives of almost every one in society. "Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva has not neglected the responsibilities attached to his office, and has been performing his duties efficiently and honestly," the prelate added.

The Mahanayake Thera advised the opposition to act responsibly and to utilise their time and energy on more useful endeavours that would benefit the country and the people.
