The Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a Press Release issued June 2, said, 'It has been decided to postpone the Third Special Session of the Standing Committee of SAARC, scheduled to be held on 8th and 9th of June, 2001, as a mark of respect of the late His Majesty the King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and Her Majesty the Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah of Nepal.' President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a condolence message described King Birendra as a man who had made an invaluable contribution to SAARC as one of its founding fathers. This meeting was regarded as a crucial step in the effort to revive the South Asian Association for Regional Corporation (SAARC) and hold the long overdue summit in the Nepalese Capital.
