The Government of Sri Lanka has declared Thursday, June 7 2001 as a day of national mourning in memory of the late His Majesty King Birendra Bin Bikram Shah Dev, Queen Aishwarya Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah Devi and members of the royal family of Nepal who tragically lost their lives June 1, 2001. All Ministries, Government Departments, Agencies, Statutory Institutions and Sri Lankan Missions abroad have been requested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to have the National Flag flown at half-mast on June 7, 2001.
