A new housing project is to be implemented for the benefit of homeless families in four selected districts of Sri Lanka by the Ministry of Port Development and Development of the South, and the Southern Development Authority. The families for this project will be chosen from electorates in the Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Monaragala Districts and Kolonne in the Ratnapura District. The Southern Development Authority and the ‘Habitat’ Organisation will provide the financial assistance. It is proposed to build 50 houses in each electorate totalling 1250 under this project. More than 11,000 applications have been received from applicants who receive an annual income of less than Rs. 48,000 and own lands but not houses. The Southern Development Authority is expected to conclude interviews of prospective beneficiaries Wednesday.
