In memory of those who fought for peace
[07 June 2001]

"I call upon the Nation to observe June 7th, Ranaviru Day, as a day of quiet remembrance of our heroes with an aspiration for peace" President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga said in her message on National War Heroes Day, today.

"On 7th June, 2000, Ranaviru Day was declared to specially remember those who sacrificed their lives in the defence of the nation, and others maimed in action, and those presently engaged in establishing the writ of Government in the North - East.  Besides, we wish to keep in mind those families who have lost their loved ones in the defence of our motherland."

"On June 7th 2001 we are remembering them once again and let this year's theme be on Remembrance and Peace, because every man, woman and child has suffered directly or indirectly as a result of the ethnic strife," said the President in her message.

The President further emphasised in her message that the government had initiated moves to establish a just and lasting peace, where all people irrespective of their ethnicity could live with dignity.
