Opposition moves for impeachment of Chief Justice: Supreme Court issues injunction restraining Speaker

The Supreme Court issued an interim injunction June 6, restraining the Speaker, from appointing a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate the allegations against the Chief Justice.

The order prevents the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee until the final determination of the Fundamental Rights application.

In the meantime, the motion to impeach Chief Justice Sarath N Silva was handed over to Speaker Anura Bandaranaike yesterday.  The motion includes 14 charges against the Chief Justice.

77 members of the opposition including UNP and JVP MPs have signed the motion.
