A Commission to regulate IT education is to be set up in Sri Lanka. It will overlook the activities of the various institutions, which provide training in the field of information technology. Speaking in Parliament Friday, Minister of Information Technology Development, Indika Gunawardena said that the present shortage of IT professionals is 2500, and that it would increase to 25,000 within the next five years with the new IT institutes and universities to be established. Presently, fourteen universities conduct courses and award degrees through affiliated private institutes in the country, which function under the Ministry of Industrial Development. Therefore, assessing the standards of these institutes is a necessity at this juncture, the minister said. With the establishment of this new regulatory Commission the IT sector will be able to ensure standards, issue and cancel permits and receive complaints from aggrieved parties regarding IT education in the country.
