Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has congratulated Jack Straw, on his appointment as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the UK. The message is as follows: Excellency, It was with great pleasure that I learnt of your appointment as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs following the unparalleled victory of the Labour Party at the recent General Elections. I should like to convey to you my warm congratulations on this occasion and offer you my sincere good wishes for every success during your tenure of office. You bring to your distinguished office long years of parliamentary experience and a successful tenure as Home Secretary in the previous government. I recall my meeting with you last year when we had the opportunity of exchanging views on important issues confronting the global community. We shared perceptions on the threat posed by terrorism to democratic institutions throughout the world. I am thankful to you for your deep understanding of the terrorist problem faced by Sri Lanka and its international dimensions. The principled action taken by the British Government, consistent with its anti-terrorist policy, is greatly appreciated by the people of Sri Lanka. Our two countries have always enjoyed close relations based on traditional bonds of friendship and shared democratic values. These relations have continued to strengthen in recent years in a wide range of fields, particularly in trade, tourism, investment, culture and education. I look forward to working closely with you in further promoting our bilateral relations and cooperation on global issues. I hope to be able to call on you as soon as possible. Please accept, Excellency, the assurance of my highest consideration and my best wishes for your personal well being.
