[June 14, 2001]

President Kumaratunga sent a message of congratulations to Tony Blair on his re-election as the Prime Minister of the UK.

“The overwhelming mandate given by the British people to you for a second term is unparalleled in your country’s history, reflecting their unequivocal endorsement of your Government’s policies and achievements during the past four years under your leadership. The results also bear ample testimony to their continuing confidence in your stewardship and vision for the future,” said Kumaratunga in her message.

The full text of the message is as follows:

My dear Prime Minister,

Please accept my warmest congratulations and sincere good wishes on your re-appointment as Prime Minister for a second consecutive term following the resounding victory of the Labour Party at the General Elections.

The overwhelming mandate given by the British people to you for a second term is unparalleled in your country’s history, reflecting their unequivocal endorsement of your Government’s policies and achievements during the past four years under your leadership. The results also bear ample testimony to their continuing confidence in your stewardship and vision for the future.

As you commence a new term in office, the Government and people of Sri Lanka join me in extending to you our best wishes for every success in your future endeavours. I look forward very much to working closely with you in the future to enhance the traditional friendship and cooperation between our two countries.

I recall with pleasure the very useful discussion we had early this year in London and hope very much that we will be able to continue our dialogue at the forthcoming CHOGM in Brisbane later this year.

With warm regards and best wishes for your continued good health and well being.

Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga

President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
