[June 15, 2001]

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar reiterated the government’s continued commitment for the protection and promotion of human rights in the present security context and stated that Sri Lanka is the only government in the world to prosecute over 550 police and security forces personnel for various criminal offences while engaged in security operations.

He made these observations while briefing heads of diplomatic and other missions on the human rights situation in the country.

Minister Kadirgamar also referred to the establishment of the Permanent Inter Ministerial Standing Committee and the working group to coordinate responses to the UN Human Rights Mechanisms.

He also briefed the dignitaries of the establishment of the Human Rights Commission and the appointment of three zonal Commissions to inquire into alleged disappearances during 1988-90.

The Attorney General gave a detailed account of the criminal investigations into the multiple killings of inmates at the Bindunuwewa Rehabilitation Center.
