Government seeks UNHCR help for census in conflict areas
[June 18, 2001]

The Department of Census has sought the assistance of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR] to implement the activities in rebel-held territory in the north-east of the country.

The Census Chief expects that UNHCR would get contact the LTTE and seek its cooperation for the success of the census; 20 years after the last census.

He is also expected to persuade the Tamil political parties who have opposed the census on the grounds that a proper count will be unsuccessful due to the unsettled situation in the area.

Meanwhile, the Department of Census is training 100,000 enumerators to visit residences and institutions from June 25 to July 5.

The final phase of Sri Lanka’s 13th Population & Housing Census is planned for July 17 this year. The government has declared that all institutions in both the public and private sectors be closed during the afternoon session so that the working population could be back home for the census.

The enumerators will visit residences between 6.00 p.m. and 12.00 midnight.
