CBK takes charge of National Disaster Plan
[June 19, 2001]

A National Disaster Management programme is currently being developed on a Presidential directive to provide policy guidance and to coordinate, facilitate and monitor the implementation of strategies for all disaster programmes, both natural and man-made.

A new institution, which will be the central body -the Human Disaster Management Council – is being currently set up directly under the President.

In 1998 the President set up the Presidential Task Force National Programme on Human Disaster Management.

It has been estimated that over 180,000 people have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict in the northeast of the country.

The Human Disaster Management Council is expected to pay close attention to creating awareness in the general public of the need not only to pave the way for these displaced persons to return to normal life but also help all persons who have in some manner been traumatized.
