Public Service to be computerised
[June 19, 2001]

“A major improvement will be provided to the public sector with a major computerisation project,” said Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake at a ceremony June 18.

The occasion was the launching of a Domestic Internet Exchange.

“All ministries, departments and agencies will be computerised soon to seek a greater efficiency, productivity and overall improvement in the provision of public service,” said the Prime Minister.

At present Sri Lanka has only 40,000 internet users and a few IT professionals. Compared to neighbouring India, Sri Lanka’s IT development is considered low.
