The Speaker’s ruling on the opposition motion to impeach Chief Justice Sarath N Silva is expected to be delivered soon. The two main opposition parties the United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP – People’s Liberation Front) submitted the motion to Parliament June 6 requesting the appointment of a Select Committee to probe the charges against the Chief Justice. On the same day, a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court issued an Interim Injunction restraining the Speaker from appointing such a Select Committee.
