Speaker issues ruling on impeachment

Speaker Anura Bandaranaike today delivered a ruling on the motion to impeach Chief Justice Sarath N Silva, rejecting the Interim Injunction issued by the Supreme Court. He added that the Supreme Court had no authority to overrule Parliament and that impeachment proceedings should begin.

The two main opposition parties, the United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP – People’s Liberation Front) submitted the motion to Parliament June 6 requesting the appointment of a Select Committee to probe the charges against the Chief Justice.

The same day, a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court issued an Interim Injunction restraining the Speaker from appointing such a Select Committee.
