Chief Minister Reginald Cooray of the Western Province today denied media reports that said the PA controlled Western Provincial Council had adopted a resolution condemning the Urban Development Authority (UDA) for taking over some of the functions of the Colombo Municipal Council. Speaking to the PRIU today, the Chief Minister said ‘only a debate was held but no decision or vote was taken in this regard’. Recently, the Central Government took over the water supply to the City of Colombo and the management of the city’s premier parkland - the Vihara Maha Devi Park, and certain city planning projects. Mangala Samaraweera the Government Minister in charge of urban development claims his intention is to upgrade services and make Colombo a beautiful city. The demolition of unauthorised structures in the city was strongly condemned by the Colombo Municipal Council.
