Today
is World Refugee Day
[June
20, 2001]
For
the first time in history, World
Refugee Day is celebrated internationally today. It coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the 1951
Convention considered to be the founding instrument for refugee
protection.
It
has been estimated that over 180,000 people have been displaced due to the
ongoing conflict in the North East of the country.
The
Sri Lanka Red Cross Society [SLRC] is one of the leading NGOs in Sri
Lanka, which provides humanitarian assistance to displaced persons. Red
Cross assistance to displaced persons has been mainly in the areas of
Jaffna, Vavuniya, and Mulaitivu and Trincomalee.
